The Roopkund Trek is to a Himalayan explorer what the movie 'Sholay' is to a hardcore Bollywood buff. Just like Sholay is the total Bollywood entertainer (it has action, drama, comedy, romance), Roopkund is the typical Himalayan trek. This trek has snowcaps, meadows, lakes, forests, folklore; and yes, it has a fascinating flashback too. Roopkund is a ton lake, lying in the Garhwal Himalayas in the Chamoli region of the Indian state of Uttarakhand. Situated at a high altitude, the lake remains frozen almost all through the year. Roopkund is also called the 'Mystery Lake', or the 'Skeletal Lake', on account of the more than a few hundred human skeletons found dotted in and approximately the lake. Roopkund trekking begins in the town of Loharjung and takes you from side to Side Mountains replete with rich biodiversity and charming surroundings. You travel from side to side little hilly villages before inward in Ali Bugyal. It is an alpine meadow at a height of about 10830 feet on top of sea level. As you ascend, you meander through forests of fir, spruce and deodars, and as you reach the top, the trees vanish and expansive and lush emerald flat lands greet you. You may also be able to see animals that come at this time to graze throughout summers.
